Karapitiya Trail Hospital
Established in 1982, the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle is the largest, most respected national healthcare provider in the south of Sri Lanka and the 3rd largest national hospital in the island.
In 2007 a 5-storey Cancer Treatment Centre was added at the site. Led by a dedicated staff, it supports the care of tens of thousands of patients from the southern districts and beyond. The treatment center has an operating theater, ICU, male, female and pediatric ward, a radio iodine unit, cobalt radio therapy unit, and an nearly completed brachytherapy and radiotherapy unit.
Hospital Limitations and Need for Support
In 2015 the highest number of recorded hospital deaths were cancer related (4-5 deaths per month) and national incidence is on the rise. The Southern Expressway, has increased ease of access to the hospital, but also brought an increased number of patients from farther regions (currently the hospital services patients from Eastern, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Western and Southern Provinces)
Hospital resources stretched (See Need to Know Stats box). The hospital requires committed public and private support to meet escalating need.
The life saving work of the Karapitiya cancer care team needs yours support!
